King Street Preschool

Welcome to King St. Preschool

Our newest addition to our ʻOhana, King Street operates out of the historic First Chinese Church of Christ, in Honolulu, and was sanctioned by King Kalākaua, in 1892, as the first kindergarten west of the Mississippi.

Our convenient downtown location boasts of ample parking, garden classrooms and sprawling play yards. Our fully equipped kitchen, stage and meeting hall facilitate our cultural presentations and celebrations with families.

Our students have use of a multi-media room where Chinese and Hawaiian culture, songs, chants, prayers and ukulele lessons are taught, in addition to a college size gym where students engage their bodies in games, races, and calisthenics, daily.

Children have the opportunity for extended periods of exploratory play where they choose from the following areas: blocks, dramatic play, art, books, math manipulatives, writing materials, sensory experiments and small and large motor activities.

Children’s ideas are at the forefront of our planning, enabling ownership and interest in the subject matter. Teachers focus on the process and not the end product. Children are encouraged to make observations about their world while using their senses.

In our active learning centers teachers collaborate with children to create child centered, engaging, and open-ended environments in a carefully organized and thoughtful manner according to the unique ways in which children learn.

Small groups of children are coordinated throughout several periods of the day to enforce more sustained periods in investigating topics.

We currently have three classrooms: Our Toddler Class consists of students ages two to three. Children are learning to tend to their own needs and develop relationships with others in their lives. Students follow a routine for the day and are encouraged to participate for short periods of time in learning concepts in preparation for preschool.

The other two classrooms are mixed, ages three to five. One of the benefits to this pedagogy is that children develop a sense of family with their classmates. They become a “family of learners” who support and care for each other. Older children serve as mentors and assume leadership roles. Younger students are nurtured by the older students and are introduced to more sophisticated approaches to learning.

We welcome the opportunity to meet you and your family and look forward to serving you!
