Neighbor Island class dates:
Neighbor Island classes will be scheduled once there are 10 people registered and payment has been made.

Ocean Safety Technician Course I
Prerequisites:
a. Swimming skills and physical ability to complete a 500 yard pool swim in less than 12 minutes
b. Surfing and surfboard management skills

This course is designed for individuals who have no formal skills training or certifications in the field of ocean safety, emergency medical care, or aquatic rescue and are interested in participating in the State of Hawai’i, Department of Education, Surfing Program as a qualified Surf Coach.

The 24 hour course of instruction includes basic First Aid and Cardio Resuscitation Certification, basic ocean rescue skills training, and subject matter specific to the sport of surfing from the professional disciplines of epidemiology, human factors, marine science, sociology, and law.

The course will provide the participant with the certifications, skills, and resource materials to develop a D.O.E. surf club hazard management plan which is a requirement of the Department of Education for Surf Club development.

Upon the successful completion of the course participants will receive nationally recognized certification in Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency First Aid, and a Certificate of Course Completion. This Certificate of Course Completion states that the participant has met all the requirements of the State of Hawai’i, Department of Education, as a Surf Coach. The certificate is valid for two years.

Ocean Safety Technician Course II
Prerequisites:
a. Emergency First Aid, Professional First Responder, or Emergency Medical Technician (Basic, Intermediate, or M.I.C.T.)
b. Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation Certification (CPR)
c. State of Hawaii, Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation, Blue Card or Certificate of Professional Development from the University of Hawaii in Ocean Safety Education
d. Swimming skills and physical ability to complete a 500 yard pool swim in less than 12 minutes
e. Surfing and surfboard management skills

This course is designed for individuals who have completed all available ocean safety skills courses for the non-professional who are interested in further developing their ocean safety skills and certifications and are interested in participating in the State of Hawai’i, Department of Education, Surfing Program as a qualified Surf Coach.

The 16 hour course of instruction includes basic ocean rescue skills training and subject matter specific to the sport of surfing from the professional disciplines of epidemiology, human factors, marine science, sociology, and law.

The course will provide the participant with the skills and resource materials to develop a D.O.E. surf club hazard management plan which is a requirement of the Department of Education for Surf Club development.

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive a Certificate of Course Completion. This Certificate of Course Completion states that the participant has met all the requirements of the State of Hawai’i, Department of Education, as a Surf Coach. The certificate is valid for two years.

c. United States Lifesaving Association Open Water Lifeguard Certification

This course is designed for the ocean safety professional who is interested in participating in the State of Hawai’i, Department of Education, Surfing Program as a qualified Surf Coach.

The 8 hour course of instruction includes subject matter specific to the sport of surfing from the professional disciplines of epidemiology, human factors, marine science, sociology, and law.

The course will provide the participant with the skills and resource materials to develop a D.O.E. surf club hazard management plan which is a requirement of the Department of Education for Surf Club development.

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive a Certificate of Course Completion. This Certificate of Course Completion states that the participant has met all the requirements of the State of Hawai’i, Department of Education, as a Surf Coach. The certificate is valid for two years.

($120 per participant)

Course fees include all books, certifications, certificates, and resource materials needed to develop and implement a Department of Education Surf Club Program or to develop and implement an ocean safety management plan for any ocean recreation related business or activity.
